The House of Representatives has just passed a bill that affects overtime pay.
About the Act
The Working Families Flexibility Act will allow employers to give employees their choice of paid time off instead of time-and-a-half pay for overtime hours worked. The bill passed the House largely along party lines, but there is much heated debate between Republicans and Democrats about whether this helps or hurts American workers. Republicans in favor of the bill say that it will give workers more control over their time, while Democrats opposed to the bill say that it gives employers the final say regarding when comp time can be used and when employees can be paid for overtime. The bill does contain important protections to ensure that employers are not allowed to coerce employees to elect comp time instead of overtime pay.
