New Jersey and Local Payroll Tax

NJ.jpg

Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill allowing municipalities in New Jersey with a population of at least 200,000 to impose an employer payroll tax.  This tax may not exceed 1% of the employers payroll.  Currently Newark is the only municipality that administers this tax, but this bill will affect other municipalities.

The bill that became effective July 24, 2018 states employers may exclude this tax on employees who are residents of the municipality where the tax is imposed.
