Effective January 1, 2020, the Worker Protection Unit will be able to start and enforce legal proceedings concerned with wage payment, workplace safety, and fair employment practices, including provisions of the Prevailing Wage Act, the Employee Classification Act, Minimum Wage Laws, the Day and Temporary Labor Services Act, and the Wage Payment and Collection Act. The Unit will work with the Illinois Department of Labor in its efforts to identify and take action against violations of these policies and laws.
The Worker Protection Unit will also assist regulators, state and local authorities in sharing information when it comes to prosecuting these violations. The chief goal of the Unit is to promote outreach and enforcement of Illinois fair employment practices. They are expected to provide a report of their first year’s work to the Illinois governor and General Assembly in December 2020.
