Can the Heartbleed Bug Infest Your Payroll?

The Heartbleed Bug is a serious security threat for anyone using the internet’s OpenSSL.  For many years, the highly successful OpenSSL has been extremely popular among system vendors and service providers, and its widespread usage makes Heartbleed equally pervasive.  Reports claim that the Bug has been around for several years, but has only recently been “discovered”.  Those using the Bug are able to decode information that users believe to be encrypted and safe, like user names and passwords.  In an effort to address the issue, Fixed OpenSSL has been released and is being deployed.

Many very large, popular websites are encouraging users to change their passwords.  These include banks and financial institutions, email service providers, on-line shopping sites, and social media networks.  Don’t forget any sites that may be linked to your payroll history information.  If you have Employee Self Serve or any portals where employees update or view their own data on a secure site, encourage your employee users to be diligent in refreshing passwords regularly.

Although Many SaaS software solutions were affected, in house solutions are secure behind your company’s firewall. Feel free to contact Optimum for any further questions relating to Heartbleed and the security of our system, or fill out the form to the right to watch a free demo of our software today.
